Getting started with the Copa America

Whether you’re a seasoned developer or just dipping your toes into the world of sports data, our step-by-step instructions will ensure you’re equipped to harness the power of Copa America data like never before. While we assume you’re familiar with the Copa America, let’s quickly refresh our memory on what makes this tournament so unique and why integrating it into your application is a must.

Copa America Historic facts

The South American association of FIFA has organised the Copa America since 1916. Countries such as Chile, Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil participate in the Copa. Argentina and Uruguay are the record champions with 15 titles, while Brazil is the number three with nine titles. Argentina is the reigning champion because they won in 2021.

Since 1993, the ten CONMEBOL countries have invited two countries outside South America to participate in the Copa America. Mexico is the country that gets asked the most. They have been invited ten times. Costa Rica, with five participations, is in second place, while the United States is in third place with four. Never has an invited country won the Copa America. The United States was the host of Copa America (2016).  (The Guardian)

COPA AMERICA 2021

The Copa America final of 2021 was a fight between Brazil and Argentina. In the end, Argentina won Copa America 2021. Lionel Messi finally claimed the Copa America and added it to his Trophy Room. It was Messi’s Copa America, even though Neymar was also on fire during this tournament.

Let’s dive into how to get Copa America data with the Sportmonks’ Football API.

How-to get Copa America data with the Sportmonks’ Football API

Welcome to our guide on how to build your Copa America application using Sportmonks’ Football Data. We’ll walk you through accessing four critical pieces of information:

  1. Full season schedule
  2. Standings
  3. Topscorers
  4. Team squads

Before we begin, please note that you’ll need access to the Copa America (league ID: 1114) to display and access the data. If you still need access, contact our Sales Team for more information on how to add it to your subscription.

Let’s gather the correct football data and build your Copa America 2024 application

Copa America 2024 Season Schedule

Imagine you want to load the complete schedule of the Copa America 2024 and display it visually (Copa America). You’ll need the complete schedule, including knockout games, which are determined when the season starts.

To display the entire season schedule, our development team has added a property on both fixture and team responses called `is_placeholder`. This property indicates if the resource is used to display dummy data. You can use the `GET Schedule by Season ID` endpoint to retrieve all the stages with the fixtures and the teams involved:

https://api.sportmonks.com/v3/football/schedules/seasons/22871?api_token=YOUR_TOKEN

Copa America 2024 Season Standings:

Are you interested in an overview of all the groups and standings? You can best use our ‘Standings by Season ID’ endpoint for this with some includes:

https://api.sportmonks.com/v3/football/standings/seasons/22871?api_token=YOUR_TOKEN&include=participant;details;group

This endpoint returns information about the participating countries, standing details like points, goal difference, wins, losses, etc., and the group the country is in.

Copa America 2024 Topscorers

It’s always interesting to see which players are the top goal, card, and assist scorers in a big tournament. You can use the `GET Topscorers by Season ID` endpoint:

https://api.sportmonks.com/v3/football/topscorers/seasons/22871?api_token=YOUR_TOKEN

The above request will give a basic API response with only IDs. If you also want information about the players, you will need to use the player include.

*At the time of writing, there is no topscorer data available. Therefore, we’ve included the visual example on the left of the 2021 season (ID: 16761).

Copa America 2024 Team Squads

This final section will show you how to get the team squads for the Copa America 2024. There are multiple ways to retrieve squads, but the best option is to use the ‘GET Squad by Team and Season ID‘ endpoint.

The endpoint returns (historical) squads from your requested Team and Season ID, including player performances. Let’s say you’re interested in the squad of Argentina (team ID: 18644)

https://api.sportmonks.com/v3/football/squads/seasons/19726/teams/18644?api_token=YOUR_TOKEN

Like all other endpoints in our Football API, you can enrich the response by adding includes to your request. Let’s say you want the statistics and player details, you will need to add the parameter include=details;player to your request

You can also narrow the request by selecting and filtering specific fields. For example, if you only want the player name and image instead of all the player info. Interested in more information about filtering and selecting? Please check out our tutorials on our developer documentation pages.

*Please note that the Copa America squads have yet to be announced when writing this how-to guide. Therefore, we will show the Argentina Copa America 2021 squad.
