Premier League

The Premier League is the most significant anticipated domestic league worldwide. So, let’s start to find out what the penalty statistics in the Premier League are.

Remember that we are looking at last season (2022/2023).

Conceded

In 2023, Nottingham Forest conceded the most penalties, with nine conceded penalties. Six of those were scored, and three were missed. Fulham and Brighton & Hove Albion both conceded eight penalties. At Fulham, only one was missed, and seven were scored, while at Brighton, two missed and six were scored.

Awarded

The champions of the Premier League were awarded with most penalties. Before people say that this is why they became champions, we will say that this also has to do with the playing style of Manchester City. They have the ball more often than any of the other teams, and they are trying to dominate with an offensive style of football. Because of that, they are closer to the opponent’s penalty box more often.

Interestingly, the runner-up of this season (Arsenal) only received four penalties. They scored three and missed 1. Number three, Manchester United were awarded only three penalties. All went in. They have the same stats as Chelsea, Wolverhampton and Everton.

Penalty scorers

Erling Haaland scored 7/7 penalties. Alexis Mac Allister scored 6/6 penalties, and Ivan Toney scored 6/7. Harry Kane scored 5/6, and Saíd Benrahma scored 4/4. Aleksandar Mitrovic took eight penalties but only scored 4.

Penalty Killers

Dean Henderson, José Sá and Nick Pope saved two of the penalties their teams conceded. Henderson only played 18 matches, while José Sá played in 36 and Pope played in 37 matches. Gavin Bazunu, Alisson Becker, David de Gea, Lukasz Fabianski, Fraser Forster, Bernd Leno and Emiliano Martínez, Jordan Pickford, Robert Sánchez, Danny Ward, and Jason Steele all saved one.

All-time penalty killers

What might be even more interesting is the all-time penalty killer in the Premier League. The percentages are way lower.

Lukasz Fabianski is on top. He played 352 matches in the Premier League while playing for three different teams. Out of 46 penalties against him, he beat 15 penalty takes, a save percentage of 32.6%. Huerolho Gomes played 195 matches while playing for two different teams. He stood between the posts versus 35 penalties and could stop 11, 31.4%. Simon Mignolet (245 matches, two teams) saved ten penalties out of 28 he faced (35.7%). Ben Foster (390 matches, four teams) saved ten out of 56 penalties (17.9%). Shay Given (451 matches, five teams) also saved ten penalties while facing 64 (15.6%).
