The 2022 World Cup will follow in the footsteps of previous editions, with a 32-team group stage that narrows the field to 16 teams – only the top two teams from each group will progress. The 16 survivors will then compete in a single-game knockout tournament. The winner advances, while the loser is eliminated. Every match must have a winner on the day, and extra time and penalty kicks will be utilised if required.
During the group stage, there will be up to four matches each day, spread throughout the day. The only matches that will overlap are those played on the last day of group stage play, and this is strictly for competitive reasons. Every time zone on the planet will be able to watch matches at reasonable times throughout the day. Here’s how the local kickoff timings in Qatar look.
